The Akademischer Segelverein Wismar (ASW) was founded in 2012 at Wismar University as an independent, registered association. Since then, it has grown steadily and now has around 100 members.
Since the Hanseatic city of Wismar is our gateway to the Baltic Sea, our primary goal is to introduce students and non-students interested in sailing to the joys of sailing. Our members, who come from all age groups, regularly gain experience in sailing, handling boats and equipment, and good seamanship. Thanks to our mix of young and old members with varying levels of sailing experience, everyone learns something new and can benefit from the experience of others. And there’s always plenty of fun to be had.

As a club that owns a classic 6KR cruiser, the “Wings of Wismar,” we regularly take part in various events in the Baltic Sea region. Depending on the wind, we travel as far as Kiel, Rostock, Heiligenhafen, Denmark, and Sweden. The highlight of the year is Germany’s largest classic boat gathering, the German Classics in Laboe.
In the summer, we take part in the Wismar Sailing Association’s weekly Wednesday regatta to continuously improve our skills in regatta mode and train our prospective skippers. When the wind and sun are right, we also go out to the bay for a swim or enjoy dinner with a fantastic sunset. This allows us to forget the stress of everyday life.
Ambitious sailors will also find their place with us. With the M.A.T.CH. Box in our portfolio, we participate in various national and international competitions. Our regular crew is always happy to welcome new faces or sailing enthusiasts who want to make a transfer.
Yes, that’s part of it too. As autumn slowly approaches, the boats are taken out of the water at the end of October. We plan and carry out various maintenance tasks together: from renewing the electrical system and painting the underwater hull to refurbishing the old wood of the Wings of Wismar.
The winter work also offers the opportunity to expand our own knowledge in the areas of boat maintenance, repair, and construction. Over the years, we have accumulated a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the club, which is often put into practice in our own solutions. We have everything on board, from woodworkers, electricians, sailmakers, and locksmiths to painting and polishing professionals. We also now use 3D printing and vacuum technology in some cases to manufacture carbon parts for our racer, the M.A.T.CH Box.
